It is nicknamed the Pink Palace of the Pacific, with its soaring turrets, tropical gardens and hushed coconut grove. The Royal Tower, a modern building, is also a part of the hotel and it is adjacent to the Historic Building. The hotel has a large lobby with shops. Small palms and plants fill the lobby adding to the tropical theme. Guests are greeted with fresh flower leis upon arrival and there is an island luau occurring weekly (reservations are recommended). (0909/SD) The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources is conducting a project to restore sand to approximately 1,730 feet of shoreline from the west end of the Kuhio Beach, near the Duke Kahanamoku statue, to the existing Royal Hawaiian groin. Restoration work will be occuring on Waikiki Beach between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily. Pedestrians will be able to access the ocean during work times by crossing over the haul route at designated crossing locations. The Diamond Head end of Kuhio basin will remain off-limits for the duration of the project.
